Finding a passage in the Bible can be confusing. There are many different types of Bibles with many different page numbers and many Bibles are organized differently than others. You might want to find a passage in order to help you get through a tough time in life. Maybe you are involved in academia and need to find a passage for research or study. Regardless of why you need to find a passage in the Bible, doing so is easy, quick and painless.
Choosing The Correct Version of the Bible
Step 1
Obtain the version of the Bible that has the proper translation for you for the passage you want. Over the years there have been many different iterations of the Bible and many different translations. There original Bible was written in Aramaic, a dead Greek language. In order to find the passage you want you must first find the right version of the Bible, There are many, many translations in English, including the King James Bible, the NIV or New International Version. Finding the right translation is also important because, according to Deacon Paul Carson, who is a biblical scholar and Church Deacon, the Catholic, or Douay-Rheims Bible has seven additional chapters than the protestant version, the Tynsdale Bible. If you happen to have a copy of the protestant Bible you will not have access to those chapters.
Step 2
Use the index at the beginning of the Bible to find the book of the Bible that contains the passage you are looking for. Most Bibles are broken up into different "books" of the Bible. These "books" are akin to chapters. In order to find the correct passage, you are going to need to turn to the right book. The "books" or chapters are marked by names such as Revelations, Romans, Acts, etc.
Step 3
Turn to the page in the book of the Bible with the passage you are searching for. If you are unsure of the exact passage you can use deductive reasoning to find some, for example if you are searching about a passage relating to the end of world, which Christians refer to as Armageddon you may want to search the final chapters. This may be time consuming. Another way would be to find an online version of the Bible and use your browser's search capability to find certain keywords relating to the passage you are looking for, so for something involving the Birth of Jesus you would search for birth, manger, etc.
Step 4
If all else fails, reach out to an authoritative source, such as a pastor, priest or deacon. The Bible is a relatively long book and if you do not know the passage by the page number, just like any other book you will have a very hard time finding exact verses and chapters.
